The average hides a wide spread. A quarter of couples spend £10,000 or less and a quarter spend more than £26,000, by Bridebook's count. This guide covers what couples really spend: the averages by region and guest count, the biggest line items, and where the overspend comes from. If you already have a number and need to divide it, the wedding budget breakdown does the splitting, and the free wedding planning spreadsheet is that split in a sheet you can fill in.
The average wedding cost UK couples pay in 2026
The two big UK surveys ask different couples at different points, which is why their numbers never quite match. Bridebook mixes newlyweds with couples still planning; Hitched asks only the newly married, after the bills are paid. Read them as a range, not a disagreement.
| Survey | Average cost | Per guest | Who they asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridebook UK Wedding Report 2026 | £20,604 | £278 | 7,000 married and planning couples |
| Hitched 2026 report | £21,990 | £272 | 2,020 couples married in 2025 |
A flat average does not mean flat prices. Hitched has the average spend per guest up 4 percent in a year, from £261 to £272, and Bridebook describes lower-spending couples working harder to stay inside their budgets. The same day costs more each year; the average stays put because couples change the day.
Three decisions set most of your budget
Venue and catering together take about half of what the average couple spends, and every guest you add multiplies through the catering, the drinks, the stationery and the cake. Before you fall in love with anything, agree the guest count. It is the single most powerful lever you have.
The date is the second lever. Venues price Saturdays from May to September at a premium; the same room on a Friday, a Sunday or outside the summer is cheaper, and midweek or winter dates cheaper still. The third is the ceremony: a register office wedding costs a few hundred pounds in legal fees, against £600 to £970 for a registrar at a licensed venue on the council lists compared in that guide.
The biggest line items
Bridebook's 2026 report shows where the £20,604 actually goes. Venue hire and catering take just over half. Attire is next, ahead of photography and flowers put together. These shares are of what got spent, and they add up to 100 percent with nothing held back.
| Category | Share of the average |
|---|---|
| Venue hire and catering | 51% |
| Wedding attire | 19% |
| Photography and videography | 10% |
| Flowers and décor | 7% |
| Entertainment | 7% |
| Other suppliers and extras | 6% |
The same report publishes an average spend for each supplier. The biggest single lines are £6,040 for venue hire without food, £5,406 for reception catering and £2,002 for evening food. They do not add up to £20,604, because not every couple buys every supplier, so read them as the cost of that line, not as slices of one wedding.
| Supplier | Average spend |
|---|---|
| Venue hire, without food | £6,040 |
| Reception catering | £5,406 |
| Evening food | £2,002 |
| The dress | £1,532 |
| Videographer | £1,514 |
| Photographer | £1,484 |
| Décor | £1,404 |
| Florist | £1,187 |
| Reception music | £1,061 |
| Rings | £1,057 |
The venue line moves most between regions and seasons. What a wedding venue costs breaks it down by venue type, day and month, and what a planner costs is a separate decision from the day itself.
Average cost of a wedding in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Neither survey publishes a single figure for England, because England is where the extremes are. London is the most expensive place in the UK to marry at £26,986 on average, 31 percent above the national figure, while the North West is the cheapest at £17,342. Scotland comes in above the UK average; Wales and Northern Ireland come in below it.
| Region | Average wedding cost |
|---|---|
| London | £26,986 |
| Scotland | £22,987 |
| South East | £22,637 |
| South West | £22,304 |
| West Midlands | £20,006 |
| East of England | £19,794 |
| Wales | £19,175 |
| Yorkshire and the Humber | £18,769 |
| Northern Ireland | £18,564 |
| North East | £18,410 |
| East Midlands | £17,981 |
| North West | £17,342 |
A villa or château wedding in France, Italy, Spain or Portugal can undercut a UK venue on hire and food. Travel, accommodation and a local planner claw much of that back, and fewer guests tend to make the trip, which is either a cost or a feature depending on your guest list.
What a wedding costs by guest count
Totals rise with the guest list, but not in a straight line. The photographer, the outfits and the rings cost the same for 50 people as for 120, so small weddings cost more per head and large ones less.
| Guests | Average total | Per guest |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | £15,162 | £303 |
| 70 | £21,791 | £311 |
| 100 | £22,510 | £225 |
| 120 or more | £26,000 | £217 |
Below 50 the fixed costs dominate. A wedding for 20 to 60 guests works through those numbers, and a register office ceremony with a restaurant meal is the cheapest legal wedding most couples can have.
Where couples actually overspend
More than half of newlyweds, 56 percent, spent more than they planned. A third, 32 percent, stayed on budget, and only 6 percent came in under, according to Hitched. The overspend rarely comes from one big decision.
- Guest count creep. Ten extra evening guests feel free until the catering, bar and furniture quotes come back.
- Booking the venue before agreeing how the total budget splits, then squeezing every other supplier to fit around it.
- The quiet costs: VAT missing from quotes, service charges, corkage, supplier meals, insurance, alterations and delivery fees. The right venue questions surface most of them before you sign.
- No contingency. Prices rising between the deposit and the balance is normal, so hold back 5 to 10 percent and pretend it does not exist.
Keep every quote against the line it belongs to
The averages are a place to start, not a bill. Once quotes arrive, the only useful comparison is each one against the money you set aside for that line. The free wedding planning spreadsheet is that sheet: these shares, plus columns for the quote, what you have paid, the due date and the supplier.
Or skip the sheet. Aisley tracks your budget against every quote that comes back, and keeps what is left in view while you decide. Nothing is booked until you say so. If you are also choosing between the free planning apps, Aisley, Bridebook and Hitched compared sets out what each one is actually for.
Quick answers
£20,604 in 2026 according to Bridebook's survey of 7,000 couples, and £21,990 according to Hitched's survey of 2,020 couples married in 2025. The average cost per guest is £272 to £278.
There is no single published figure for England. Bridebook's 2026 regional averages run from £17,342 in the North West to £22,637 in the South East, with London far above the rest at £26,986.
Around £21,000 for an average UK wedding in 2026. A quarter of couples spend £10,000 or less and a quarter spend more than £26,000, so the guest count, region and day of the week matter more than the average.
Yes. A register office ceremony, a restaurant or pub dinner for 20 to 30, and a photographer for a few hours fits inside £5,000. It gets hard once you want a dedicated venue and a sit-down meal for 60 or more.
The venue plus food and drink. Together they take 51 percent of the average budget in Bridebook's 2026 report, which makes them the things to negotiate hardest and book first.
The UK average is £272 to £278 per guest for the whole day. Large weddings come in lower, around £217 a head at 120 guests or more, and weddings of 50 to 70 guests nearer £300.
Often the venue and food are cheaper in Spain, Portugal or rural France, and the guest list naturally shrinks. But flights, accommodation, a local planner and sometimes a second celebration at home can erase the saving. Treat it as a different wedding, not a cheaper one.
