# Wedding budget breakdown: where the money actually goes

> How to split a wedding budget by percentage, with worked examples at £15,000, £25,000 and £40,000, typical deposit schedules, and the contingency most couples forget.

Split a wedding budget with rough percentages before you collect a single quote: around half on [the venue, food and drink](https://getaisley.com/guides/how-much-does-a-wedding-cost-uk), about a tenth on photography and video, and 5 to 10 percent held back untouched for the surprises.

Percentages beat fixed numbers because they scale with what you have. The split below works for most UK weddings, shown at three real budget levels.

## The percentage split

| Category | Share of budget |
| --- | --- |
| Venue, food and drink | 45 to 50% |
| Photography and video | 10 to 12% |
| Outfits, rings and beauty | 10 to 12% |
| Flowers and styling | 8 to 10% |
| Music and entertainment | 5 to 8% |
| Stationery and cake | 3 to 4% |
| Transport and extras | 2 to 3% |
| Contingency | 5 to 10% |

The split flexes with what you care about. Doubling the flowers budget is fine; the discipline is taking those points from another line, not from the contingency and not by quietly raising the total.

## What that looks like in pounds

| Category | £15,000 | £25,000 | £40,000 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Venue, food and drink | £7,000 | £12,000 | £19,000 |
| Photography and video | £1,600 | £2,800 | £4,500 |
| Outfits, rings and beauty | £1,600 | £2,700 | £4,300 |
| Flowers and styling | £1,300 | £2,200 | £3,600 |
| Music and entertainment | £1,000 | £1,700 | £2,700 |
| Stationery and cake | £500 | £900 | £1,400 |
| Transport and extras | £400 | £700 | £1,200 |
| Contingency | £1,600 | £2,000 | £3,300 |

*Each column sums to its budget. At £15,000 the venue line usually means an off-peak date or a smaller guest list rather than a cheaper version of the same day.*

## When the money actually leaves

Budgets fail on timing as often as on totals. Deposits go out gently over months, then almost every balance lands in the final six weeks. Map the payment schedule [when you book each supplier](https://getaisley.com/guides/wedding-planning-timeline), not when the invoices arrive.

- Venue: a deposit of 20 to 50 percent at booking, balance due 4 to 8 weeks before the day.
- Caterer: a deposit at booking, final balance once you confirm numbers, usually 2 to 4 weeks out.
- Photographer, band and florist: a few hundred pounds each to book, balances in the final month.
- Outfits: typically half when you order and half at collection, with alterations on top.

## Keeping it on track

- Track three numbers per supplier: quoted, paid so far, and still owed. Most blown budgets are lost track of, not overspent on purpose.
- Recount the total every time [the guest list](https://getaisley.com/guides/how-to-cut-wedding-guest-list) moves. Per-head costs shift silently underneath you.
- Do not spend the contingency on upgrades. It exists for the price rise between booking and balance, the extra alteration, and the thing you have not thought of yet. [Wedding insurance](https://getaisley.com/guides/wedding-insurance-uk) covers the disasters; the contingency covers everything smaller.

## Quick answers

### How much contingency does a wedding budget need?

5 to 10 percent of the total, held outside every category. Supplier prices routinely rise between booking and the final balance, and the last month always produces costs nobody planned.

### Who pays for the wedding these days?

Most UK couples now pay for most of it themselves, often with family contributions toward specific things like the venue or an outfit. Agree contributions early and in numbers, not intentions.

### What is the easiest place to cut a wedding budget?

The guest list, then the date. Trimming suppliers saves hundreds; those two decisions move thousands, because venue, catering and drinks all scale with them.
