The average UK wedding costs between £20,000 and £25,000 in 2026. That number hides an enormous range: a 40 guest wedding outside peak season can come in under £12,000, while a Saturday in July at a country house near London passes £35,000 without trying.

Here is where the money actually goes, what changes the total most, and the few decisions that set most of your budget before you have booked a single supplier.

## Three decisions set most of your budget

Venue, catering and guest count together account for roughly half of what you will spend, and every guest you add multiplies through the catering, the drinks, the stationery and the cake. The date is the second lever. Venues price Saturdays from May to September at a premium; the same room on a Friday, a Sunday or in the shoulder months is often 15 to 30 percent cheaper, and midweek or winter dates cheaper still.

## Region changes the number

London and the South East run 20 to 30 percent above the national average, driven by venue hire and catering. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of the North come in under it for a comparable day.

A villa or château wedding in France, Italy, Spain or Portugal can undercut a UK venue on hire and food. Travel, accommodation and a local planner claw much of that back, and fewer guests tend to make the trip, which is either a cost or a feature depending on your guest list.

## Where couples actually overspend
